MANUEL MARTÍN CUENCA

Producer, Scriptwriter and Director

He was born in Almería in 1964. He studied Hispanic Philology in Granada and Information Sciences in Madrid.

In 1988 he began to work professionally in cinema as assistant Director, Script and Casting Director, collaborating with directors such as Felipe Vega, Alain Tanner, Mariano Barroso, Iciar Bollaín and José Luis Borau, among others.

In 1999 he began to write and direct his own films. During those years he also worked as a professor in different film schools such as San Antonio de los Baños International Film School  (Cuba), Film and Audiovisual School of Madrid (ECAM) and the Universidad Carlos III, among others.

in 2004 he created his own production company, Loma Blanca P. C., with which he plays several of his films and produces his five latest works: Fiction films “The Daughter” (2021), “The Motive“(2017), “Cannibal” (2013) and “Half of Oscar” (2011) as well as the experimental documentary “The B Side” (2015).

He has also directed  the films: “The Cuban Game” (2001), “The Weakness of the Bolshevik” (2003), “Bad Times” (2005), “The Treasure” -TV Movie-(2007) and “Last witnesses: Carrillo, Communist” (2009), among others.

He has collaborated with several magazines, he has written a novel and he is the author of various cinema books.  He founded Lagarto publishing house, with which he began a collection of cinema books.

In 2017  his film “The Motive”, based on a novel by Spanish writer Javier Cercas, won the FIPRESCI Critics Award at the Toronto International Film Festival and has nine nominations to the Goya Awards winning the Goya Award for Best Actor and Goya Award to Best  Actress.

He is actually working on the postproduction of his last film, “The Daughter”.

It received Forqué Award to Best Film and 9 nominations to Goya Awards. It won the Goya Award to Best Main Actor (Javier Gutiérrez) and to Best Supporting Actress (Adelfa Calvo).
